File Extension KML
File extension KML may be created with Google Earth application. A simple text editor can be used to enter raw KML data. The ZIP format is used to compress KML files and its related image files into KMZ archives. Users are also able to share KML and KMZ files via email. These can also be hosted either publicly on a web server or locally, to be shared within a private network.

Map browsers like Google Earth are used to display the KML files in the same way web browsers display HTML files. After properly configuring the server and sharing the KML URL (address), other users that have installed Google Earth will be able to view the file extension KML hosted on one’s public web server. KML is also displayed by other applications like Google Maps for mobile platforms, Adobe Photoshop, NASA Worldwind, AutoCAD, ESRI ArcGIS Explorer and Yahoo Pipes.

KML stands for Keyhole Markup Language. This file format, which is an XML file and grammar format file utilized in modeling and storage of geographical features like points, images, polygons and models displayed on the Google Earth and Google Maps applications. KML can be used in the sharing of location information with other, utilizing any of these applications. In the same way as in HTML, KML contains a tag based structure with attributes and names for specific display purposes. This means that Google Earth acts as a KML file browser, while Google Maps only serves to display selected features of the KML file. KML and KMZ files can be opened by Google Earth if they bear the proper file name extension.

File extension KML structure specifies a set of features like placemarks, images, polygons and textual descriptions for display on Google Earth, Google Maps or mobile phones that contain the KML encoding implementation. Every location must bear a latitude and longitude point. The display is further specified by the use of the camera view, tilts, altitude, heading and other provisions.

The KML format shares the same structural grammar as GML and are both distributed as KMZ files. This just means that the format is merely a zipped KML file with a KMZ extension. Unzipping the KMZ file generates a single doc.KML file that can be accompanied by any overlay and icon images that are referenced in the KML file. The KML 2.2 specification was proposed to the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). Subsequently, its status as an open standard for all geobrowsers was guaranteed.
